Wet Nurse?
Anyone remember hearing about "wet nurses" way back when? You know, those poor women who were lactating and for a price or even a meal and a place to stay, usually slaves, would breast feed the babies of the "ladies of leisure"? For years no one has mentioned this practice. It seems to have faded with the times. However, just yesterday, a local news channel was running a poll. You could call in or email your answers. The question, "Would you consider giving your baby to a wet nurse so as to get the benefits from breast feeding?"
Having been lucky enough to share that special bonding, those special times with all three of our kids and know the benefits of breast feeding, I can honestly say I woudn't let someone else do that for me if I wasn't able. I would have to know everything about this woman, every little bit of genetics possible. Just think of the health issues of today. Even if you thought you were 100% sure that this woman was healthy, how could you be entirely positive? I just couldn't risk my baby's health. Formula fed babies are just as healthy as breastfed ones.
How do you all feel?
Just a little food for thought especially for those who are pregnant or considering it. Congrats to those of you who are!
