Violent Crime - Is it Really on The Rise?
Just ask anyone who watches the news in this country and they will most likely tell you the same thing: Crime is getting out of control and rising quickly. If you get all of your information from the nightly news, you would probably think the same thing. But, guess what? You would be wrong. Of course, crime is worse now than it was in the 1950’s. Since then there has been a great population boom and the introduction of several new drugs to this country too, only making the crime that much more deadly.
But, according to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, violent crime in 2006 decreased a whopping 13.9% since 1997. That’s a lot! Surprising huh? Don’t get too comfy just yet. Hundreds of thousands of women are assaulted each year, most often by someone they know. Although rape and assault by strangers are rarer, they still happen. What do you do to stay safe in these times? Many of us could benefit from talking with our friends about the risks out there and sharing ideas and advice on how to keep safe.
