"One more click and that's it!"
This is the threat I receive from my four-and-a-half year old close to a dozen times a day. Just when I think the kids are safely entrenched in an entertaining and educational television episode I sneak off to the study to catch up on a few of my latest emails. I read and type with as much speed as I can muster just waiting for the pitter patter of little feet coming down the hall.
Why is it that a mother's presence seems to be required at every household activity? Whether it be cooking, playing, even watching TV, kids just can't let you out of their radar. I must say that, quite unfairly, the same cannot be said of Dad. Even on the weekend when he is around all day kids just seem to require mom.
One time I went out for almost two hours to meet a friend. Before leaving I saw my husband half dozing on the living room sofa while the kids were playing in the family room. I reminded him I was going out and received a semi-acknowledgment of my words. Upon returning I see the girls still hanging out where I left them and walk in the living room to find my husband fast asleep on the couch. He had never even moved from that spot!
The pitter patter is getting closer and soon they turn the corner into the room. One leaps into my lap and the other is behind me on the chair, arms tightly woven around my neck...this email session is over!
