How long has it been since...

How long has it been since you've seen your girlfriends that you grew up with. The ones that were there when you had your first boyfriend, your first period, your first break-up? The women who carried you through the tough times and laughed with you at the merriment of life?

For me, it had been a very long time. Way too many years to count, and certainly not something I want to go without doing again soon! Oh the fun we had! My second family, the family that I grew up next to, was having their 50th wedding anniversary tonight. My dh and I went and I was very nervous. Would they think I was very old/ugly/boring? All of the nervousness came back of high school. Yet, somehow, none of the fear was real in my mind. These were the people that I grew up with. The ones I threw mudballs at and shared my first kiss with. The ones who helped pull me through my parents divorce, and the many trials and tribulations of gaining a step father.

These were the women that I knew throughout the years I could call and say, "Am I as bad as..." or "I really  need my friends!" And they were there. No hesitation. These women were my rocks, my grounding points - the ones who would say, "Yeah, you've gotten fat!" or "Go for that guy!"

Tonight we danced and laughed, we told our secrets from years past, exposed our crushes and laughed about aging. Tonight we were kids again. Granted, we were really the sweaty old people on the dance floor, but we were kids again in the way that we were taken right back to 25 years ago. Receiving and giving the same warm welcome and excitement as if we had wandered out of our front door to play.
