Race Day Report

I am very happy to report that the race is over!! The night before I of course got a terrible night's sleep because I was staying at my in laws house and nervous that the alarm wouldn't go off at 5:30 AM. Turns out that would not have mattered because I woke up every half hour anyway and couldn't go back to sleep at all past 4:00.

Countdown to race day!

Only four days to go until the half-marathon (which I was very unhappy to learn starts at 6:30 AM!). Last Wednesday I did my final long run, shooting for 2 hours but ending up a couple of minutes short. It was not fun at all I'll tell you that. As soon as I finished I drove straight to Whole Foods and ate about $20 worth of their hot food bar in under 90 seconds.

Girls weekend: The Report

I've been out of touch for several days because I was on, and then recovering from, a girls weekend. I can't even remember the last time I've set out with some ladies to a destination in another state for a weekend of nothing but rest, relaxation and fun. Here's the scenario: my best friend from high school, to whom I am still extremely close, invited six of her friends to her family beach house in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Half-marathon training day

So...I haven't written too much about my training for the half-marathon I am running on May 4th. I haven't really been talking much about it either, probably it is just in case something happened and my training never really took off and I had to drop out. I hate making excuses for myself. But I am happy to report that things are right on track.

Jumping off the high dive of life

This was the subject line of an email a friend recently sent me. As soon as I read it I knew what it was about. The last few times we were together she mentioned her indecision about having a third child. We reviewed the positives and negatives and now it seemed that she had decided to go for it.

Spring "Break"?

Whoever coined the phrase "spring break" was obviously looking at things from the students' perspective. For parents it's more like "make a desperate attempt to fill up 12 hours a day with stimulating activities while it is not even warm out yet." This year I was actually pretty excited about the whole thing because for the first time in several years we were really going away. Granted, Pompano Beach, FL with the in-laws is no Paradise Island...but hey, it beats 5 days in a row at the neighborhood tot lot.

The Nerd Gets the Girl

Where have I been? Until the March 17th issue of People magazine arrived in my mailbox I had no clue about Drew Barrymore's new guy. Surprise, surprise it is Justin Long. You probably don't know his name (at least I didn't) but he has been playing the "nerd" roles on TV and in the movies for quite some time.

The Worst Mom Ever!

We all have memories from when we were little of our mothers doing things that we perceived as horribly embarrassing but now realize were not actually all that crazy. I remember feeling like I didn't have the right clothes or that my lunch wasn't cool (brown bread instead of white bread, goopy natural peanut butter instead of smooth jif). When I was a new mom I vowed that my daughter would never feel that way so I always try my best to make sure I do things the "right" way.

That time of year again...

No, I'm not referring to getting in shape because bathing suit season is right around the corner, nor am I referring to setting our clocks forward one hour (although losing an hour is pretty much never a good thing). The annual event to which I am referring is none other than tax time.

Success with the dress!

I return from my solo trip to NYC triumphant! The three hours up on the train would have been enough; I was able to read and dispose of several magazines that have littered my bedside table for more than half a year. Not to mention polishing off our book of the month as well.

Mom does New York

New York City here I come!

Got the go-ahead from my hubby (note that I do not use the word "permission" here because this is not 1950) to go to NYC this weekend...ALL BY MYSELF. Just to clarify - that means without kids! I will be hanging out with some friends and family, doing some wining and dining and shopping with my sister for her wedding dress. If you are wondering why I will not be shopping for a bridesmaid dress, please see my first blog "Death of the Bridesmaid."

Snow day?!? (updated)

Here in the mideast they are calling for quite a bit of snow overnight and into tomorrow. I am conflicted.

"One more click and that's it!"

This is the threat I receive from my four-and-a-half year old close to a dozen times a day. Just when I think the kids are safely entrenched in an entertaining and educational television episode I sneak off to the study to catch up on a few of my latest emails. I read and type with as much speed as I can muster just waiting for the pitter patter of little feet coming down the hall.

Lipstick jumble

What WAS that? Admit it, you were watching. I’m sure several million of us were held captive, longing for a juicy, witty reprise of s*x and the City. Well it was nowhere close. These new wanna-be shows (Cashmere Mafia, etc.) have taken the successful New York career women to such a ridiculous hyperbole that she is no longer recognizable or enjoyable.
